What is a sub-community?

A sub-community is a closed network within ResearchGATE for an institution, society, company, lab, department, etc., to interact. Building a sub-community allows communication and collaboration within a private network while still benefiting from access to the entire ResearchGATE platform. Whether your colleagues work in the same building or on different continents, having a sub-community allows you to enhance your research making you more effective and efficient.

ResearchGATE understands the importance of security and data protection, and all your internal communication and data is safely stored on your own servers.

The benefits:
- Fast and efficient communication between members of your organization
- Data security through usage of your own servers
- Get feedback and updates through discussion threads and polls
- Share and collaborate on documents using ReStory (Research Storage History)
- Make appointments and use the group calendar including ReMeet
- Make polls and vote using ReVote
- Use other tools and applications that simplify collaborations
- Get a dedicated URL (e.g. www.researchgate.net/yourorganisation) and welcome page
- We are happy to extend our features or custom-program applications

Subcommunity properties

Each sub-community will have a unique sign-up and login page with their personal institutional logo. Within ResearchGATE you will see your sub-community tab and the ResearchGATE logo in the upper left-hand side of the screen will be replaced with an institution's logo.

The ResearchGATE team is committed to using technological resources to promote the pursuit of scientific endeavor and we can develop and install unique programs based on the needs of your sub-community.

How to use a subcommunity?

After logging in to ResearchGATE, you will automatically come to the ResearchGATE Sub-community page. Using the main navigation bar, you can access the different parts of the entire platform. To reach your subcommunity’s private sphere, click on the “Community” tab.

Now the logo at the top left will change from the ResearchGATE logo to that of your sub-community. While you are in this private area, your logo will be visible – as soon as you re-enter the public side of the ResearchGATE platform, the ResearchGATE logo will reappear.

Once you enter your subcommunity, you will first come to the “Overview” page. You can design this as you please – each “Admin” has access to the easy-to-use HTML Editor. Here you can insert texts, upload graphics and add links.

On the right side of the screen, all of the groups that belong to your subcommunity are shown under “Linked groups.” Each committee has its own group, to which the respective members are assigned. By clicking on the name of the group, you can enter the group page. You may, however, only be active on the group’s site if you are officially a member of the committee. The subcommunity as a whole also has its own group that includes all members of the organization.

Each group can utilize the following functions:

Now back to the overview site for your subcommunity.

Next to the “Overview” button is the “Members” button. By clicking on it, you will see a list of all the members of your subcommunity. You can easily search for a specific person by using the search box. Admins for your subcommunity can export the entire member list as an excel file and can also import new lists.

To go to a member’s profile in order to send a personal message, for example, simply click on his or her name.

The profiles for the individual members can be personalized with certain information, including:

  • Research area
  • Contact info
  • Publication list

Each member is personally responsible for adding these details.

Each member can also individually determine his or her own privacy settings.

If you have any questions, please contact the ResearchGATE team]!
