Profile photos help your peers recognize you and increase the visibility of your research.
Having a photo on your profile is also a great way to increase your visibility to search engines – profiles with photos get up to 3 times more views than those without.
As ResearchGate is a professional network, your profile photo and account should reflect this. Please don’t add a photo of anyone (or anything) else.
Adding a profile photo
To add a profile photo, follow these steps:
- Go to your Profile
- Click on Edit at the top of your profile, to the right of your name
- Click Add profile photo or Change profile photo
- Click Upload a photo to upload a photo from your device, or Take photo to take a new photo using your camera. (When taking a photo, make sure to allow ResearchGate to access your camera.)
- Crop your photo as desired and click Save to confirm your changes.
Note: Images must be at least 180x180 pixels and no larger than 4MB. We support *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.gif, or *.png, and we suggest you use a photo that will fit inside a circle.
Editing your profile photo
To edit your profile photo:
- Go to your Profile
- Click on Edit at the top of your profile, to the right of your name
- Click on Change profile photo
- You can crop your photo by dragging it, or zoom in or out using the +/- icons
- Click Save to confirm your changes.
Deleting your profile photo
To delete your profile photo:
- Go to your Profile
- Click on Edit at the top of your profile, to the right of your name
- Click on Change profile photo
- Click on the trash can icon at the top right-hand side
- Click Save to confirm your changes.

I've deleted my profile photo, but it still shows up in search results
Once a publication, profile, or profile photo has been removed from ResearchGate, it is our policy that its old URL redirects to our main publications page or researcher index. We cannot control what the major search engines choose to keep on their search results, and it is often the case that after a few weeks these search results no longer appear.
Someone else has used my photo as their profile photo, what do I do?
If you’d like to report a ResearchGate profile that uses your photo:
- Visit our Report content on ResearchGate form
- Select the type of issue that best describes what you're reporting
- Enter details about the content you’re reporting.
