Your login email address
You can log in to your account using your primary email address or any additional email addresses you’ve added to your account. Your primary email address is where you’ll receive any ResearchGate emails.
Adding an additional email
In case you lose access to your primary email address or have other issues logging in, having an additional email address can be a great way to avoid losing access to your account.
Here’s how you can add an additional email address to your account:
-
Log in to ResearchGate using your current login email address
-
Select your profile image at the top right-hand side of any page
-
Select Settings, and then Account settings
-
Under Email address, click Add additional email
-
Type in your new email address and enter your password
-
Click Add
-
A confirmation email will be sent to your new email address. Click the link in this email to complete the verification process.
Note: if you encounter the error message "Oops! We couldn't find that token in our database", please make sure you are using the link in the latest email, as all previous links are invalidated. Check your spam folder and filters if you can't find any others.
Once you confirm your new email address by clicking the link in the confirmation email, you can use it to log in.
Changing your primary email
Your primary email is where you’ll receive any ResearchGate emails you’re subscribed to and other administrative emails. To change your primary email address, you’ll need to add your new email as an additional email first.
Once you’ve added and confirmed your new email, here’s how you can make it your primary email.
-
Go to your Account settings
-
Click the Set as primary button next to the email address you've just added to make it the primary email address for your ResearchGate account.
Account security (two-factor authentication)
To help keep your account secure, you’ll need more than just your password when logging in from a new device. If we detect a login attempt from a new device, we’ll email you a 6-digit security code which you’ll need to enter in order to finish logging in.
You can use your primary email or any additional email addresses you added to your account to log in. The security code email will be sent to the email address you used to log in.
Security code emails can only be sent to email addresses you’ve added to your account and confirmed. If you don’t have access to any of your account email addresses, it’s not possible to log in from a new device.
Changing your password
You can change your ResearchGate password in a few simple steps:
-
Log in to your ResearchGate account and go to your Account settings
-
Scroll down to the Password section and click Change password
-
Type your current password into the first text box and then type your new password into the second and third text boxes
-
Click Save new password to confirm your changes.
Note: Changing your password will automatically log you out on all other devices.
If you're logged in, but can't remember your password and need to change it, click on Change password and then Forgot password?
Forgot your password?
If you are logged out, you can reset your password by clicking the Forgot your password? link on the login page. You will be directed to a new page and prompted to type in your email address. You can use your primary email or any additional emails you’ve added to your account to receive a password reset email.
We'll send you a password reset link via email – please follow the steps in the email to create a new password.
Note: Your password reset email may take some time to arrive. If you have requested this email already and it hasn't arrived, we suggest that you add ResearchGate to your address book. You can find out how to do this here.
Haven’t received the password reset email?
If you haven’t received your password reset email within 24 hours, you can try the following options:
-
Make sure the password reset email did not end up in your junk/spam folder.
-
Add ResearchGate to your address book. Find out more.
-
Reset your password again by clicking the Forgot your password? link on the login page.
-
Contact your email administrator to ensure emails from @researchgate.net can be received.
I don't have access to my email address
For security reasons, you’ll need to access your email address inbox in order to receive a password reset link or a two-factor authentication (2FA) code.
We are unable to send the security code or password reset link to any email address that is not associated with your account. We also cannot change the email address associated with an account.
If you are unable to access any of the email addresses associated with your account, I'm afraid it's not possible to access the account when you’ve forgotten your password and/or are logging in from a new device.
If you can’t access your account anymore, we kindly suggest that you sign up again with an active email address. Once you have signed up successfully again, please see the page on Duplicate profiles for instructions on how to merge your accounts.
I get an error when I enter my email address to reset my password
This could be happening because your account hasn’t been activated, if you've recently signed up, or if your account registration expired. Please check your emails to make sure you've clicked on the link in the activation email.
