Your institution and department

Adding your professional experience and education to your ResearchGate profile helps potential collaborators learn about you and your achievements. You can easily manage all your current and past institutional affiliations and educational history in the Affiliations and Education sections of your profile.

What is a primary or additional affiliation?

Primary affiliation: This is the institution where you currently work or conduct most of your research. It's displayed at the top of your profile, just below your name.

Additional affiliation: Any other institution where you work, conduct research, or were previously affiliated with.

How to add an institutional affiliation

If you haven't added any affiliations:

  • Click Add your primary affiliation on your profile and enter the details of your current or main institution.

If you’ve already added an affiliation:

  • Click the pencil icon to manage your affiliations.

  • To add a new affiliation, click the + icon.

Note: You cannot add or edit affiliation details using the edit feature at the top of your profile page. You can only select from affiliations you've already added to your Affiliations section.

Linking your affiliation or education to an institution

When adding a new affiliation or education entry, you can choose from institutions in our database or enter the name as text. If your institution is in our database, your entry will link to its dedicated page. To ensure our records are accurate, we may occasionally update institution names in our database, and your linked entries will update automatically. You can edit your institutional affiliations and education history at any time.

How to change your primary affiliation

You can set any of your current affiliations as your primary affiliation by following these steps:

  1. Click the pencil icon next to the Affiliations section.

  2. Click Make this my primary affiliation below your desired primary affiliation.

Note: If your affiliation is verified, choosing a new primary affiliation will remove your verification. Learn more about profile affiliation verification.

Publications missing from your institution/department

Currently, publications on ResearchGate are attributed to only one institution/department. Publications are included in the count for the institution/department identified through the publication's metadata, not the author's current affiliation.

We are continuously optimizing our algorithms for data extraction and publication assignment. If your publication should be affiliated with your department but isn't yet, this will eventually happen automatically if the affiliation is mentioned in the publication's metadata or full-text. We are unable to edit the affiliation part of the metadata ourselves.
