Logging in

Your login email address

You can log in to your account using your primary email address or any additional email addresses you've added to your account. Your primary email address is where you'll receive all ResearchGate emails.

Adding an additional email address

To prevent losing access to your account, especially if you lose access to your primary email, you can add an additional email address.

Here’s how to add an additional email address:

  1. Log in to ResearchGate with your current login email address.

  2. Select your profile image at the top right of any page.

  3. Select Settings, then Account.

  4. Under Email address, click Add additional email.

  5. Type your new email address and enter your password.

  6. Click Add.

  7. A confirmation email will be sent to your new email address. Click the link in this email to complete the verification process.

Note: If you see the error message "Oops! We couldn't find that token in our database," ensure you are using the link in the latest email, as all previous links are invalidated. Check your spam folder and filters if you can't find any other emails.

Once you confirm your new email address, you can use it to log in.

Changing your primary email address

Your primary email address is where you’ll receive ResearchGate emails and other administrative notifications. To change it, you must first add your new email address as an additional email.

Once you’ve added and confirmed your new email, here’s how to make it your primary email:

  1. Select your profile image at the top right of any page.

  2. Select Settings, then Account.

  3. Click the Set as primary button next to the email address you’ve just added.

Account security (Two-factor authentication)

To keep your account extra safe, you’ll need more than just your password when logging in from a new device. If a login attempt is detected from a new device, we’ll email you a 6-digit security code that you’ll need to enter to complete the login.

You can use your primary email or any additional email addresses linked to your account to log in. The security code will be sent to the email address you used for that login attempt.

Security code emails can only be sent to confirmed email addresses associated with your account. If you do not have access to any of your account email addresses, it will not be possible to log in from a new device. For further information, please see Don't have access to your email address?

Changing your password

You can change your ResearchGate password in a few simple steps:

  1. Log in to ResearchGate with your current login email address.

  2. Select your profile image at the top right of any page.

  3. Select Settings, then Account

  4. Scroll down to the Password section and click Change password.

  5. Type your current password into the first text box, then type your new password into the second and third text boxes.

  6. Click Save new password to confirm your changes.

Note: Changing your password will automatically log you out on all other devices. If you are logged in but can't remember your password, click Change password and then Forgot password?

Forgot your password?

If you are logged out, you can reset your password by clicking the Forgot your password? link on the login pagearrow-up-right. You will be directed to a new page and prompted to enter your email address. You can use your primary email or any additional emails you’ve added to your account to receive a password reset email.

We'll send you a password reset link via email; please follow the steps in the email to create a new password.

Note: For security reasons, the link is only valid for 30 minutes. After this time elapses, you must request a new password reset email again. Please note that the password reset email may take some time to arrive.

Haven’t received the password reset email?

If you haven’t received your password reset email within 24 hours, please try the following:

  • Check your junk/spam folder.

  • Add ResearchGate to your address book. Find out morearrow-up-right.

  • Reset your password again by clicking the Forgot your password? link on the login pagearrow-up-right.

  • Contact your email administrator to ensure emails from @researchgate.net can be received.

Don't have access to your email address?

For security reasons, access to your email address is required to receive a password reset link or a two-factor authentication (2FA) code.

We are unable to:

  • Send security codes or password reset links to any email address not associated with your account.

  • Change the email address linked to an account.

If you are unable to access any of the email addresses associated with your account, it is not possible to access the account if you’ve forgotten your password and/or are logging in from a new device.

If you can no longer access your account, we kindly suggest that you sign up again with an active email address. Once you have successfully signed up, please see the page on Duplicate profiles for instructions on how to merge your accounts.

Get an error when you enter your email address to reset your password?

This could be happening if your account hasn’t been activated (if you've recently signed up) or if your account registration has expired. Please check your emails to ensure you’ve clicked on the link in the activation email.
